SZA, The Weeknd & Travis Scott – Power is Power Lyrics Review + Meaning (A Game of Thrones Soundtrack)

First of all, SPOILER ALERT. Today, the Laviasco Lyrics Review is on the track Power is Power by SZA, The Weeknd & Travis Scott. Power is Power is the lead single for the Game of Thrones album For the Throne. Let’s review the lyrics of Power is Power.

Introduction

Part I

The title “Power is Power” is a reference to a scene that took place in the first episode of the second season of Game of Thrones TV show. In the scene, Lord Baelish aka Littlefinger tells Cersei Lannister “Knowledge is power”, to which Cersei responds to him by saying “Power is power” after nearly murdering Littlefinger by the help of her guards.

Part II

The song is pretty well produced with a few classic drops that we were used to hearing from Trilogy days by The Weeknd. The beats sound familiar to that of The Weeknd’s collaboration with Kendrick Lamar on “Pray For Me” for Black Panther soundtrack. In overall, the beats are well produced, they are unique but they become quite annoying after repeating the song for at least an hour.

[Verse 1: The Weeknd]

The lyrics by The Weeknd in the first verse sound kind of forced to me. The first four lines in the verse made complete sense and they were referring to “Winter is here” catchphrase of the Game of Thrones show. But the fifth line “Heavy is the crown only for the weak” doesn’t quite fit in with the previous four lines in the first verse.

The knife in my heart couldn’t slow me down

[Chorus]

Part I

Let’s go to the chorus section. The lyrics in the chorus section of Power is Power has a lot to do with the character of Jon Snow. Here are some spoilers if you haven’t watched the show yet. Jon Snow basically gets stabbed by his own friends and dies for a while. But then he gets resurrected by the help of the dark magic involving fire.

I rise from my scars, nothing hurts me now
Now watch me burn it down

Part II

I find these lines very poetic and amusing. After the resurrection, the personality of Jon Snow gets a little colder. He was always chasing for the title of “The best swordsman” but now he is a nihilist. Nothing matters to him. The only threat for him are the zombies marching towards the kingdom. He is emotionally unavailable and he is ready to burn his scars now.

[Verse 2: SZA]

Part I

I don’t know if we need it your way
You wouldn’t take my place

The second verse in the lyrics of Power is Power by SZA might be talking about Cersei Lannister. So as to fight the zombies marching towards the kingdom, the house Stark and the house Targaryen make a plan to convince the house Lannister to join the cause alongside with them. These lines could be referencing Cersei’s mentality of putting her family and herself in the priority list before the zombies and the kingdom.

Part II

Feelings of emptiness
Only love could kill me, God bless

This line could be a spoiler of the show. Fans have been theorizing that Cersei can actually be killed by her lover, Jamie Lannister. Cersei Lannister is despised for her manipulative words and her desire to fill the void inside of her by lust. As we all know, her twin brother, Jamie, has been her lover from the first season till the last season. Will Jamie kill Cersei? We will see how true this line is after we watch the show.

[Verse 3: Travis Scott & SZA]

Part I

I took a drag, bust it out the gates, my lil’ baby slay

In the lyrics of the track, Power is Power, the third verse by Travis Scott and SZA might be talking about Daenerys Targaryen. Travis might be referencing to Daenerys and her dragons here. Since the dragons are her babies, she doesn’t need anyone and anything else for her protection.

[Part II]

Ain’t no knife, dagger, bullet that can do it

Daenerys is proud of her children, aka the dragons that can spit fire. The other houses race for the best weapons for their soldiers such as knives, daggers, bullets, etc. But, a single dragon is more than enough for Daenerys. Again, too many spoilers in this track. However, the intense usage of autotune by Travis Scott kills the vibe for me.

Analysis

The song is suitable for people who are into Game of Thrones. The song is haunting, questioning and full of spoilers. I am glad that the cast from the show Game of Thrones helped the singers with the concept of the song. They did their best while writing the lyrics for a soundtrack of such a complicated TV show.

Personal Take

I give ‘Power is Power’ by SZA, The Weeknd and Travis Scott a light 06/10 in the Lyrics Review category. The track is supposed to represent the show and not the spoilers. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the song. Good job team!
