Shawn Mendes – If I Can’t Have You Lyrics Review

The new single “If I Can’t Have You” is upbeat that marks the fourth musical era of Shawn Mendes. 2019 is going pretty well so far since a lot of major artists have been releasing the music. Shawn has this sweet and raspy voice of which none of us can get enough of. Let’s review the lyrics of If I Can’t Have You by Shawn Mendes.

Introduction

The track has the Shawn Mendes quality of melody and rhymes. The lyrics of ‘If I Can’t Have You” is likely to be loved by hard-core Shawn Mendes fans. There are no hidden meanings behind the lyrics of the song. The messages are pretty straightforward. It is a regular Shawn Mendes song.

Chorus

I can’t write one song that’s not about you
Can’t drink without thinking about you

In the chorus section, the obsession of Shawn Mendes over a girl has been highlighted and it is repeated for a solid count of seven. The song is not good for someone going through a breakup. It creates a toxic environment in someone who is really sad at the moment.

[Verse 1]

It doesn’t matter ’cause I’m so consumed
Spending all my nights reading texts from you

The lyrics in the first verse of ‘If I Can’t Have You’ by Shawn Mendes are in the same fashion of intoxicating relationship. The song seems to have been created in a formula of repetition but as far as the issue of the mental health is to be looked at, the song isn’t even comparable to his previous hits such as “Stitches”, “Treat You Better” and other hits.

[Pre-Chorus]

I know that you’re the feeling I’m missing
You know that I hate to admit it

The lyrics in the pre-chorus of ‘If I Can’t Have You’ is layered in the same toxic environment. Shawn admits that he is missing his love even though he hates admitting it.

[Verse 2]

But I can’t move on if we’re still gonna talk
Is it wrong for me to not want half?

Let’s review the lyrics in the second verse of “If I Can’t Have You” by Shawn Mendes. Is it somehow different from the previous lines? Yes, there is a subtle change in his attempts to move on. He tells us that it is hard to move on from someone if you somehow manage to talk to that person even when you’re not free.

[Bridge]

I’m trying to move on, forget you, but I hold on
Everything means nothing if I can’t have you, no

In the bridge section, however, Shawn Mendes points out how hard it really is to move on from such life events. He tries to show his struggles to move past the toxic relationship. But his struggles are haunting him back by the truth that he can never have his crush in his life.

Analysis

The song gets a little annoying after repeating the song for at least four or five times. The phrase “Everything means nothing if I can’t have you” gets repeated for more than eleven times in the entire song. The entire chorus section repeats for seven times. It gets too annoying after a while. The song isn’t comparable to previous Shawn Mendes projects.

Conclusion

The song is suitable for the age range of twelve to twenty-eighth. An older version of me wouldn’t find the song interesting enough to listen to. The song whirls up around a toxic and obsessive nature of Shawn Mendes over girls. Even though the song has a happy undertone, I do not think it is healthy for people of such young age groups to listen to such music.

Personal Take

I give ‘If I Can’t Have You’ by Shawn Mendes a light 04/10 in the Lyrics Review category. Revise your previously released tracks, Shawn, you can do better and then I might start treating you better once again.
