August Alsina & Rick Ross – Entanglements Lyrics Meaning
The meaning behind the lyrics of the song ‘Entanglements’ by August Alsina & Rick Ross is hidden as a direct attack to test Will Smith’s patience. We all know, this song is a direct reference to the Red Table Talk of Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith, which is embedded below. The song, however, doesn’t give any sort of positive affirmation to the Smith family, which can go to the legal grounds with ‘defamatory’ accusations against August Alsina. Hello everyone, this is Chris for Laviasco providing you with the most intellectual analysis of the song. You can find us on Twitter @laviasco as well.
The Smiths were involved in the drama after August Alsina came forward to the media to reveal he had had a relationship with Jada. Then, Red Table Talk was released confirming the allegations with Pinkett claiming the relationship was simply an ‘entanglement’.

To begin with, the lyrics used by August Alsina on ‘Entanglements’ is hands down, defamatory. No one should be insulted for trying to work out personal relationships in various ways. [Intro/ Chorus: Rick Ross, August Alsina & Takeoff]
The song begins with a self-proclaimed title of ‘special moment in history’. In the chorus section of the song, August Alsina defines the actual meaning of “entanglement”. Let’s say, his version of the definition is not at all worth listening to. Despite Jada Pinkett Smith getting very picky with the words she was using during the red table talk, her words were used against her to make her feel bad about the decision that she had made. Even though August Alsina has agreed that his relationship with Jada was nothing more than an entanglement, he still chose to publicly shame the Smith family with his song.
[Verse 1: Rick Ross]
Rick Ross in his verse speaks of the reputation Jada has earned by being tied to Will Smith. With a strong wordplay, Rick Ross defines the mental state of Alsina as Jada trying to question August’s willpower. In order to move on from the sickness that Alsina had been going through, he chose to disclose his deeper darker personal secrets to Jada. Then, Rick Ross gives a final jab at something that really mattered to Pinkett, her relationship with Tupac Shakur. The song then progresses to Ross talking about how Alsina had felt at the time and what he still feels about her.
[Verse 2: August Alsina & Rick Ross]
As the second verse progresses, Alsina says, he is only being honest about how he is feeling. He would rather much like to keep his relationship with Jada as an entanglement than her claim of a “relationship”. The singer asserts, he doesn’t want any string attached to her name. All along, he feels bad for Will Smith because of what Jada did to have moments with August. This was a cold-hearted move from Jada which was made with the intention of keeping Will Smith at his place. However, Alsina lives his life with a principle that once you get out of his life, you will never be allowed to get back.
[Verse 3: August Alsina]
This is the part that really bothers me. We can see the disrespect towards Will Smith for accepting Jada Pinkett Smith after leaving him in tears for August Alsina. This is wrong and this has to stop. Just because Jada chose to have a different life for a brief period of time, she and Will do not deserve the disrespect. In the verse, August chooses to be very graphic about the things that he and Jada did in private while simultaneously laughing at Will Smith for a lack of boundary in his life. Alsina said he knows his action is wrong but after all the things he has been through, it feels right to him.
