kenzie, anatomy: the Lyrics & Their Meaning

The first verse of the song ‘anatomy’ begins with kenzie recalling a call made on a Tuesday. Here, the catch you should understand is that the call is from her father. From the lyrics, we should understand that they are not on good terms with each other as she gets emotional when she shares she still has his phone number saved up despite the complexities. The call begins with her father saying, “Hello stranger, it’s been forever.” kenzie accuses her father of acting normal but she says there is nothing normal about this phone call.

Then, in the chorus, kenzie shares details of the emotional complexities she experienced during her childhood in her home. kenzie mentions “trust issues” with “soaking tissues,” which means the relationship lacked trust and the relationship was full of tears and sadness. Then, she accuses her father of lying to her sister, being cold towards her by saying “I don’t miss you” to her, and not giving her closure of any sort. However, even though he was cold to her sister, he always saw her as a child on his shoulders.

Then, she follows with the coldest lyric in the chorus “It’s just anatomy, you’re only half of me,” which means kenzie is only half his DNA biologically. Other than this not-so-new information, she tells him that he doesn’t know her. “You’ve been my missing piece” means that she had always wanted to be taken care of her by her father. But she accuses him of being indifferent towards how she feels. For kenzie, her father meant more than just a biological relationship. But now she gives herself a closure by saying “It’s just anatomy.” She openly claims that she despises that he is her father and she repeats her emotional chorus sentiments in the outro of the song as well.

In the second verse of “anatomy” lyrics, kenzie mentions a childhood trauma that led her to date people like her father cause she thought it is normal. She couldn’t distinguish between abuse and love since she learned about love from her family in the worst possible way. Her father wasn’t particularly nice or affectionate towards her mother either. kenzie gets comments about her nose being similar to that of her father’s. So, she went and made altercations to her nose in L.A. so that people would stop commenting on the resemblance of her nose to that of her father’s.

The following chorus of the song speaks on similar emotional complexities to that of the previous chorus with a few more revelations. kenzie’s father always made empty promises that he would visit her but he couldn’t get enough courage to see her. But she resonates this to him saying “I don’t miss you” and accepts that he was lying to her all along. She has come to the conclusion that he doesn’t miss her either, just as he doesn’t miss her sister.

anatomy Lyrics

[Verse 1]
You called me today, on a random Tuesday
Don’t ask me why I still have your number saved
Hello stranger, it’s been forever
You’re acting normal but nothing’s normal about

[Chorus]
Trust issues, and soaking tissues
Lyin’ to my sister and sayin’ “I don’t miss you”
With no closure, just getting older
But you still see me as a kid on your shoulders
It’s just anatomy, you’re only half of me
But still, you don’t know me at all
You’ve been my missing piece, so why aren’t you missing me?
Guess I meant less than I thought
It’s just anatomy
Hate that you’re half of me

[Verse 2]
Hate when people say that our noses are the same
So I wеnt and got it changed like three-quarters of L.A
And I’vе dated s…ty people ’cause of how you treated mom
Now I’m with somebody good but I’m still feeling numb ’cause of

[Chorus]
Trust issues, I’m soaking tissues
Lyin’ to my sister like I never miss you
Say you’ll visit, empty promise
God, I wish that for once you’d be honest
It’s just anatomy, you’re only half of me
But still, you don’t know me at all
You’ve been my missing piece, so why aren’t you missing me?
Guess I meant less than I thought
It’s just anatomy
Hate that you’re half of me

[Outro]
It’s just anatomy, you make up half of me
But still, you don’t know me at all
You’ve been my missing piece, so why aren’t you missing me?
Guess I meant less than I thought
It’s just anatomy
Hate that you’re half of me
