Olivia Rodrigo, bad idea right?: the Lyrics & Their Meaning

The song “bad idea right?” lyrics begin with “Hey” in the intro followed by Olivia Rodrigo missing her ex in the first verse. She makes her instance clear with lines such as “Haven’t heard from you in a couple of months // But I’m out right now and I’m all f…ed up.” They are in contact after a long time and Olivia blames her ex for calling her when he is single and all alone again. She is out with her friends when he contacted her with his new address. Even though she knows they are done with each other, whenever she sees him, she surrenders to her intrusive thoughts.

In the refrain, Olivia Rodrigo battles with her inner voice which tells her to go out with her ex again. But she knows deep inside that it is problematic for her mental peace. She tries to block her inner voice “Can’t hear my thoughts (I cannot hear my thoughts) // Like blah-blah-blah (Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah)”. She uses the words “Blah” and “Thoughts” in the outro of the song as well. But this doesn’t work. She questions herself “Seeing you tonight // It’s a bad idea, right?” three times and then gives in on the fourth try by convincing herself that it is fine.

Olivia Rodrigo tries to justify her actions in the chorus of “bad idea right?” lyrics. She tells her inner voice and her friends around her “Yes, I know that he’s my ex // But can’t two people reconnect?” Then, she continues to say that she only views him as her friend, which she knows is a lie deep inside. She ends the chorus rather humorously with the lines “I only see him as a friend // I just tripped and fell into his bed”. The singer shares the same notion in the Bridge of the song.

In the second verse of the “bad idea right?” lyrics, Olivia Rodrigo finally gives in to her inner voice and leaves her friends to be with her ex. She knows it is wrong for her but she cannot triumph over her desire to be with him. As she leaves her friends, she tells them that she is feeling sleepy and is asleep. But she doesn’t open up about who she is going to be with. As she arrives in his new apartment on the second floor, he looks at her and smiles. She tries to one-up her game by saying she has seen hotter men than him but she went for him anyway.

bad idea right? Lyrics

[Intro]
Hey

[Verse 1]
Haven’t heard from you in a couple of months
But I’m out right now and I’m all f…ed up
And you’re callin’ my phone and you’re all alone
And I’m sensing some undertone
And I’m right here with all my friends
But you’re sending me your new address
And I know we’re done, I know we’re through
But, God, when I look at you

[Refrain]
My brain goes, “Ah”
Can’t hear my thoughts (I cannot hear my thoughts)
Like blah-blah-blah (Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah)
Should probably not
I should probably, probably not
I should probably, probably not

[Pre-Chorus]
Seeing you tonight
It’s a bad idea, right?
Seeing you tonight
It’s a bad idea, right?
Seeing you tonight
It’s a bad idea, right?
Seeing you tonight
F… it, it’s fine

[Chorus]
Yes, I know that he’s my ex
But can’t two people reconnect?
I only see him as a friend
The biggest lie I ever said
Oh, yes, I know that he’s my ex
But can’t two people reconnect?
I only see him as a friend
I just tripped and fell into his bed

[Verse 2]
Now I’m gettin’ in the car, wreckin’ all my plans
I know I should stop, but I can’t
And I told my friends I was asleep
But I never said where or in whose sheets
And I pull up to your place on the second floor
And you’re standing, smiling at the door
And I’m sure I’ve seen much hotter men
But I really can’t remember when

[Refrain]
My brain goes, “Ah”
Can’t hear my thoughts (I cannot hear my thoughts)
Like blah-blah-blah (Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah)
Should probably not
I should probably, probably not
I should probably, probably not

[Pre-Chorus]
Seeing you tonight
It’s a bad idea, right?
Seeing you tonight
It’s a bad idea, right?
Seeing you tonight
It’s a bad idea, right?
Seeing you tonight
F… it, it’s fine

[Chorus]
Yes, I know that he’s my ex
But can’t two people reconnect?
I only see him as a friend
The biggest lie I ever said
Oh, yes, I know that he’s my ex
But can’t two people reconnect?
I only see him as a friend
I just tripped and fell into his bed

[Bridge]
Oh, yes, I know that he’s my ex
Can’t two people reconnect?
The biggest lie I ever said
I just tripped and fell into his bed
My brain goes, “Ah”
Can’t hear my thoughts
The biggest lie I ever said
My brain goes, “Ah”
Can’t hear my thoughts
I just tripped and fell into his bed

[Outro]
Thoughts
Blah
Thoughts
Blah
