The meaning of “I,Carrion (Icarian)” lyrics by Hozier is about Icarus’s father sending him to a death trap as Icarus yearns for immortality. In this song, Hozier carefully sings about topics like ecstasy, love, burden, and denial, all through Icarus’ point of view. Icarus is famous for not surviving the transition from boyhood to manhood. The title of the song “I,Carrion (Icarian)” is also a wordplay for “I Carry On” from Icarus’ point of view as he flies too close to the sun with waxed feathers despite his father’s warnings.

Hozier, I,Carrion (Icarian): the Lyrics & Their Meaning

The intro of “I,Carrion (Icarian)” lyrics by Hozier talks about how things can go against us and we have to stay prepared for the worst-case scenario at all times. “If the wind turns, fighting a squall // Allow the ground to find its brutal way to me” means we have to surrender to nature as there is nothing as powerful as our nature. In both Pre-Chorus, Hozier reveals the overconfidence of Icarus that he wouldn’t fall “And though I burn how could I fall? // When I am lifted by every word you say to me”. He connects this to us feeling lifted up when our partner begins to trust us. We get too comfortable thinking this will remain the same forever. In the chorus, Hozier longs for his partner to trust him and lean on him as he gets more comfortable.

In the first verse, with the lines “I feel lighter than I have in so much time // I’ve crossed the border line of weightless,” Hozier refers to Icarus flying too close to the sun with his waxed feathers. We know how the story ends but Hozier offers a different perspective. He tries to tell us that as he flies, Icarus experiences the thrill and euphoria that he had never experienced before. Icarus gets too comfortable with his newfound freedom and doesn’t consider the responsibilities that come with it as Hozier sings “All our weight is just a burden offered to us by the world”.

The second verse of “I,Carrion (Icarian)” lyrics by Hozier explains the feeling of euphoria in a newfound love as Icarus’ euphoria while flying for the first time. Even though the responsibility of a relationship makes him feel heavy and difficult, he wants more instead of taking a break. As he flies in his fantasy, Hozier feels like he has finally found the missing piece of his life. He had missed the feeling of euphoria all along and he can see everything as he is flying above as Hozier sings “You have me floatin’ like a feather on the sea // While you’re as heavy as the world”. But he doesn’t realize it will soon come crashing down, just like Icarus.

In the Bridge of “I,Carrion (Icarian)”, Hozier sings “I do not have wings, love, I never will // Soarin’ over a world you are carryin'”. This is the moment of realization that the singer understands his quest for immortality is not realistic. He understands that he is only flying above the world projected by his lover. This might come down the moment his lover changes her mind. The term “Icarian” in the bridge’s closing line, “Let me be your own / Icarian, carrion,” shows the duality of longing for both neverending euphoria as well as the aftermath of the fall.

I,Carrion (Icarian) Lyrics

[Intro]
If the wind turns, fighting a squall
Allow the ground to find its brutal way to me

[Verse 1]
I feel lighter than I have in so much time
I’ve crossed the border line of weightless
One deep breath out from the sky
I’ve reached a rarer height now that I can confirm
All our weight is just a burden offered to us by the world

[Pre-Chorus]
And though I burn how could I fall?
When I am lifted by every word you say to me

[Chorus]
If anything could fall at all, it’s the world
And it falls away from me

[Verse 2]
You have me floatin’ like a feather on the sea
While you’re as heavy as the world
That you hold your hands beneath
Once I had wondered what was holdin’ up the ground
I can see that all along, love, it was you all the way down

[Pre-Chorus]
Even now, I am sky-bound
If you need to, darling, lean your weight to me

[Chorus]
We’ll float away, but if we fall
I only pray, don’t fall away from me

[Bridge]
I do not have wings, love, I never will
Soarin’ over a world you are carryin’
If these heights should bring my fall
Let me be your own
Icarian, carrion
If the wind turns, if I hit a squall
Allow the ground to find its brutal way to me

[Chorus]
If I should fall, on that day
I only pray, don’t fall away from me
