The intro of “I,Carrion (Icarian)” lyrics by Hozier talks about how things can go against us and we have to stay prepared for the worst-case scenario at all times. “If the wind turns, fighting a squall // Allow the ground to find its brutal way to me” means we have to surrender to nature as there is nothing as powerful as our nature. In both Pre-Chorus, Hozier reveals the overconfidence of Icarus that he wouldn’t fall “And though I burn how could I fall? // When I am lifted by every word you say to me”. He connects this to us feeling lifted up when our partner begins to trust us. We get too comfortable thinking this will remain the same forever. In the chorus, Hozier longs for his partner to trust him and lean on him as he gets more comfortable.
In the first verse, with the lines “I feel lighter than I have in so much time // I’ve crossed the border line of weightless,” Hozier refers to Icarus flying too close to the sun with his waxed feathers.
