Hozier, Who We Are: The Lyrics & Their Meaning

The first verse and outro of “Who We Are” lyrics is about Hozier contemplating his life and introspecting on his weaknesses. “You only feel it when it’s lost // Gettin’ through still has a cost” means that there are many things in life that can only be learned from experiencing them. These lines “Quietly, it slips through your fingers, love // Falling from you drop by drop” mean how feeble and fluctuating our emotions are. When we begin to doubt ourselves, the world around us begins to fall apart right before our eyes. However, he is hopeful that he will finally find someone who can understand him. He represents these emotions with the lines “So someone with your eyes might come in time // To hold me like water // Or Christ, hold me like a knife”, which means his partner can either make him powerful like a knife or unreliable like water which can simply break free on its own.

In the chorus section, Hozier touches on challenges we face on a regular basis. These lines “We’re born at night // So much of our lives // Is just carvin’ through the dark” represent how we try to find the purpose in our lives. Trying to find a purpose is simply ‘carving through the dark’ as we never know what is ahead of us. It’s difficult to get through it but this is what makes us who we are. Our struggles and pain shape us and our characters. The Pre-Chorus is simply confirming his message as he repeats “Yeah” twelve times.

The second verse of “Who We Are” lyrics by Hozier talks about his wasted potential which he regrets later. Most of us try to get through our corporate jobs which only helps someone else to be successful. This is represented by the lines “You and I burned out our steam // Chasing someone else’s dream”. The lines “How can somethin’ be so much heavier // But so much less than what it seems” represent how small things can bring in big troubles in our lives. Hozier regrets giving his time and attention to these insignificant things. The lines “This phantom life, it sharpens like an image // But it sharpens like a knife” mean he is breathing but he is not really alive but this has sharpened him and made him as powerful as the knife.

Who We Are Lyrics

[Verse 1]
You only feel it when it’s lost
Gettin’ through still has a cost
Quietly, it slips through your fingers, love
Falling from you drop by drop
What I had left here I just held it tight
So someone with your eyes might come in time
To hold me like water
Or Christ, hold me like a knife

[Chorus]
We’re born at night
So much of our lives
Is just carvin’ through the dark
To get so far
And the hardest part
Is who we are
It’s who we are

[Verse 2]
You and I burned out our steam
Chasing someone else’s dream
How can somethin’ be so much heavier
But so much less than what it seems
Darling, we sacrificed
We gave our time to somethin’ undefined
This phantom life, it sharpens like an image
But it sharpens like a knife

[Chorus]
We’re born at night
So much of our lives
Is just carvin’ through the dark
To get so far
And the hardest part
Is who we are
That’s who we are

[Post-Chorus]
Yeah
Yeah, yeah
Yeah
Yeah, yeah
Yeah
Yeah, yeah
Yeah
Yeah, yeah

[Outro]
You only feel it when it’s lost
Gettin’ through still has its cost
Quietly, it slips through your fingers, love
Fallin’ from you drop by drop
