Charlie Puth – Cheating On You Lyrics Meaning

We all know Charlie likes to write emotionally relatable lyrics. He has just dropped a new song. Let’s learn the meaning behind the lyrics of “Cheating On You” by Charlie Puth.

According to Genius Lyrics, Charlie had constructed the catchy hip-hop beat featuring a soft flute on Instagram in January 2019. It’s the same beat he has used in “Cheating On You”. The flute, which is a current obsession of the artists in the pop genre, adds a lot to the song musically.

Introduction

The song “Cheating On You” is a guilty pleasure after we break up and start dating someone new. For the utmost parts, we end up comparing our current date with our ex with the one and only hope of moving on from our previous relationship. I guess we are often attached to our ex whenever we are trying to move on to the next relationship.

However, the bitter truth always needs to come out. The lovers feel guilty for making love with their current date even though it’s been months since they had been in a relationship. Their exes haunt them in every move in their present life. I had told you, Charlie always writes emotionally relatable songs.

Cheating On You Lyrics Meaning

Let’s learn the meaning behind the lyrics of “Cheating On You” by Charlie Puth section-wise in detail.

[Verse 1]

In the first verse, Charlie is reminiscing about the way he and his ex got together in the first place. Their perfect little date story goes back to 2012 in his girlfriend’s mother’s couch. They shared a kiss and slowly they started to develop feelings for one another. It’s a classic story, isn’t it?

Well, it might be classic until you realize that at this moment he is kissing his new date. He is reminiscing about kissing his ex while kissing his current date. This really hurt me to my core. I pray to God so that I’d never have to kiss someone else to move from my ex.

But it’s the guilty pleasure we all can relate to. So, there is nothing much I can do other than just complain about it. Relationships can really be a burdensome debt if you don’t know how to get out of it. Learn some personal finance for these guys, it really adds up. Again, I had told you guys, Charlie writes emotionally relatable lyrics!

[Pre-Chorus]

This section is where we can feel the guilt of Charlie. He regrets walking away from a relationship for which he had once fought so hard to be in. I’m probably guessing that you guys are saying “well, it’s too late now, Charlie!”. You guys are absolutely right.

Charlie questions if he can still complete his dreams that he had shared with his ex without her in his life. He is such a gentleman, I’m telling you. Also, a little untrustworthy, I suppose, considering he was the one to leave his ex alone in the first place.

[Chorus]

The singer says he was the one to end his previous relationship. However, despite this, he still misses his ex. I wonder how can a guy be so ruthless to end a relationship and yet make a song about missing her? It doesn’t quite fit into my “conservative” head, I guess. This is the reason why I’ve hard times trusting guys.

Now that he’s dating someone else, every breath she takes draws him back to the memories of his ex. Whenever he touches her or kisses her, he feels like he is touching or kissing his ex. Charlie, you broke up with a girl thinking you could be happier with anyone in the world but see where has this keeping you hanging.

[Pre-Chorus]

Charlie confesses that whenever he is around his new date, he feels like he is cheating on his ex. It can be understood considering how men try to act tough during the breakup and they always bear the consequences later. I know this incident alone won’t teach Charlie any lessons. He’s got more emotionally relatable music coming out in the future. I can’t wait to complain about him.

[Verse 2]

The singer puts all the blames on himself. At least he isn’t still bragging and boasting at this point. He admits to being cocky and to treating his ex for granted. It’s a way for salvation, dear Charlie Puth. I’m proud of you. It’s one way to go! Not every man can admit he was wrong, to begin with.

Charlie left her thinking that he can get her back anytime he wants to. But it was a huge mistake on his part. As there is a famous quote “you don’t know what is gone until it’s gone”, Charlie’s story has been proving it. But can we all just take a moment to admire this girl he left? Can we just take a moment to admire her strength? God is seriously a woman.

[Bridge]

Now that our lover boy knows what losing someone truly feels like, he feels haunted by his ex. He doesn’t even like the way his current date tastes. It’s a huge red flag for his new relationship. Yet, he strangely admits that there is no moving on from her. But hey Charlie, it’s already too late!

Conclusion

The one thing that men really have is audacity. They try to act tough by breaking up a perfectly healthy relationship by taking her for granted so as to pursue new people in their lives. If that doesn’t go well, they unapologetically crave their ex’s attention and make a song about it. Bravo!
