Coldplay – Champion of the World Lyrics Meaning

With the album release date super close, Coldplay is here with two new songs, Champion of the World and Daddy. This song is the fifteenth track from their upcoming double album Everyday Life. The song intends to serve as a tribute to Scott Hutchison, the lead singer of Frightened Rabbit who took his life in May 2018 after battling with depression. Let’s learn the meaning behind the lyrics of the song ‘Champion of the World’ by Coldplay.

The song was released on the 20th of November which would have been Scott’s 38th birthday. So, happy birthday Scott and thank you for your beautiful music, wherever you are. According to Billboard, “Champion of the World” headlines a co-writing credit for the songwriters behind Owl John’s “Los Angeles Be Kind,” including a nod to late Frightened Rabbit singer Scott Hutchison.

Introduction: Champion of the World Lyrics

The lyrics of the song “Champion of the World” tries to salute to those who are going through this thing that we call life and are still functioning properly. As the title of the album Everyday Life suggests, their new album is going to talk about the life situations that we are familiar with but haven’t paid much attention to it.

As MTV reports, Coldplay wants to play with our emotions before they actually release the album on Friday of 22nd November 2019. Isn’t it very clear? Look at the choices of their releases. The titles of the songs are self satisfactory. Orphans, Everyday Life, Arabesque, and Daddy. Every track will take you through an emotional rollercoaster. So, I’m not sure if I should refute the claim made by MTV here because they are painfully true.

Champion of the World Lyrics Meaning

Let’s learn the meaning behind the lyrics of the song ‘Champion of the World’ by Coldplay section-wise.

[Verse 1: Chris Martin]

In the first verse, Chris Martin shows the truth behind how everyone tries to fit in with each other in the real world. Some of them, who walk alone are almost never noticed. These people try to make everything right. But in the end, nothing works for them. The social circle avoids them and the society thinks they’re outcasts when they grow up. Despite going through intense dehumanization, some of these people find a way to exist. While some of them can’t take it anymore and call it to quit. The song is a salute to everyone who is or was struggling during their stay on Earth.

[Verse 2: Chris Martin]

The singer says he tried his best to stay alight to avoid the complete isolation imposed upon the loners by the real world. He is one of those loners who he is singing for. Scott Hutchinson was one of them. Everyone in their lives is trying their best to make peace with normal society. But the direction towards which loners move with their rocketship, escaping the society, was reversed.

In this process, a few people like Scott can’t fix their rocketships anymore. This song is to salute all of the captains of their rocketships who have called it to quit while heading towards their own path avoiding all the other paths paved by the normal society. While they will be busy paving the path, we, the loners, are busy flying over them. A few of us don’t fear to crash down either.

[Chorus: Chris Martin, Chris & Will]

Even though each and every one of us has a shred of fear of failing, we keep flying towards the West when the normal world paves the way for the East. We are hoping for the best days to come and we know we can build our own destiny. The illusion of destiny being an absolute one is debatable. But the reality of working on building our own fate is real and it actually works. There is always an option to quit if it’s too much for us. But there will never be an option for us to walk towards the East when we are flying towards the West. It makes no sense.

[Outro: Chris Martin & Will Champion]

In the normal world, bicycles are used to ride along the paved path. But in our world, we convert bicycles into something that can fly and we keep flying freely. If we want to quit, we can always jump without parachutes but quitting is not an option for us. However, we salute to those who have quit as those people are the true inspirations behind us walking alone today. We walk alone, we fly alone, but towards our own direction and towards our own destiny.

Conclusion: Champion of the World Meaning

Everyone is the champion of the world. The ones that are fitting in to live an easy life are the champions of the world. We, the loners, who want nothing but freedom are the champions of the world. Everyone who has quit on their way towards freedom is the champion of the world.
