Lil Dicky – Earth Lyrics Review

The Lyrics Review for ‘Earth’ by Lil Dicky is a unique one. I wasn’t caught up by the news and the hype of the song Earth and I must say I was a little surprised after the intro. ‘Earth’ is an environmental awareness song, released three days before Earth Day in 2019, about the dangers that climate change has on our planet and its ecosystems.

Introduction

The song ‘Earth’ by Lil Dicky features many celebrities and this is the thing I didn’t see coming, at all. Justin Bieber takes on the role of a Baboon, Ariana Grande plays on the role of a Zebra and Ed Sheeran sings for the role of a Koala Bear. The cute bubbly chord progression reminds me of the song ‘Don’t Wanna Know’ by Maroon 5. ‘Earth’ is a well-produced song, it is a good track. Let’s read the lyrics now.

Verse 2

We forgive you, Germany

The intro, chorus and the first verse are all fine. At the end of the second verse, Lil Dicky says “We forgive you, Germany” and I find it a little offensive. Germany does not need to ask for forgiveness in the whole world. Most of the German Holocaust survivors have forgiven them. So, it makes no sense to me that someone would forgive a country that hasn’t begged for forgiveness. I find the line rather disrespectful to the Holocaust survivors.

Verse 3

Part 1

And, yeah, we like to wear clothes, girls still look beautiful
And it covers up our human dick (Woo), eat a lot of tuna fish

The lyrics of the song Earth do not make sense to me at all. How can you relate the original theme of the song, i.e. raising awareness about the environment to human beings wearing clothes and then eating a lot of tuna fish? Does coherency mean nothing in 2019?

Part 2

All these shootings, pollution, we under attack on ourselves
Like, let’s all just chill (Hey), respect what we built (Hey)

The mass shooting is a serious social problem. Just because an artist touches an extremely sensitive social problem and tells people to chill, I don’t think people can actually chill. The lyrics of the song Earth are disrespectful and they are trying their best to be cool about everything. It is great to take the problems in a very light way but if you are going to address such social problems then they should be respectful and sensible.

Part 3

The song has a catchy beat to it with tasteless lyrics. Talking about sex is usually sex education. It has nothing to do with raising awareness about the current issues faced by our environment.

Analysis

I agree to a point that it is difficult to collect the artists to make a song about an important topic. But the lyrics of this song are not creative. They are plain and do not contain much information about climate change. I think the song is kind of overrated, mainly because of the artists featured in the song.

Target Audience

Judging by the lyrics of the song Earth, the target audience of the song are the kids below the age of 16. If this song was made with the intention of reaching out to the people who can make a difference, then the song might not reach out to the older age group. The song is commercially successful but I do not find the song raising awareness amongst older age groups.

Conclusion

The whole song is a meme material until it gets to the last five lines of the third verse by Lil Dicky. You cannot acclaim the title of “raising environmental awareness” if you are talking about and aliens.

Personal Take

I give ‘Earth’ by Lil Dicky a light 04/10 in the Lyrics Review category. The track is intended to raise awareness about the environment that we live in but the lyrics and the selection of age group don’t quite fit in with the intention of the song.
