Eminem has reunited with Dre and Fat Joe in a new single ‘Lord Above’. The song was teased as “the most disrespectful song“. In the song, the artists try to glance upon their careers, accept their hardships and shame, and value the peaks they dominated and are still continuing to dominate, mostly in the music industry. The artists discuss imminence of loss and their desire to make consensus with their divinity is a recurring principle throughout the entirety of the song. Let’s learn the meaning behind the lyrics of the song ‘Lord Above’ by Fat Joe, Eminem, Dre & Mary J. Blige.
Introduction: Lord Above Lyrics
Fat Joe formerly spoke about the song during his promotional push for the album. It is ” the extensively arrogant song by Eminem”, apparently. But the real question is, at this point, do we even care? Well, truth be told, I don’t. However, the bars in the lyrics go hard. Therefore, we cannot say the claim of ‘the most disrespectful’ song is illegitimate. ‘Lord Above’ is a promotional track for Family Ties, an album that Joe had already considered a “classic” before it was even released.
Lord Above Lyrics Meaning
Let’s dissect the meaning behind the lyrics of the song ‘Lord Above’ by Fat Joe, Dre & Eminem section-wise.
[Verse 1: Dre]
Dre starts his verse with a token of appreciation for the blessing he’s received from God. In his lines, Dre reminisces the days where he had no money to even eat something. So, when he sees people arguing over social media, he remembers when he was hustling for his survival instead. The generational gap has convinced him that people don’t quite respect the existence of God. He is thankful for the way his life turned around for him. Dre knows even after he’s long gone, the coming generation will still know about him. The rapper knows he will be living forever and he believes he owes everything that he’s got to God.
[Chorus/ Outro: Mary J. Blige]
Mary J. Blige backs up the claims made by Dre, Fat Joe, and Eminem in the chorus and Outro section, one after another. She says she’s been grateful to God as well. The singer hates it when people don’t give enough credit to what created us in the first place. All she wants from us is to give love to the lord above us. There is nothing in this world to make Mary stop doing anything. She will never feel like giving up and stay stuck as she understands that God is with her all the time. Therefore, she is grateful for everything and asks for compassion with God for everyone.
[Verse 2: Fat Joe]
In his verse, Fat Joe points out that the commercial success of his new album is on its way. In his lyrics, he is very certain that his music will be the one to go global in the next few years. However, we will see the reality of numbers and its game after his self-highly-anticipated album drops. Fat Joe boasts about his wealth and upper-class lifestyle over his lyrics. However, at the end of his verse, he turns himself as a humble person who works for God. As a return and as a gift from God, Fat Joe believes that he’s been blessed with everything he has achieved in his life so far. It looks like a forced attempt to blend in with the concept of God but it’s alright, I suppose.
[Verse 3: Eminem]
Don’t lie, this verse is the reason why we all are here. Eminem is the reason why Fat Joe believes his project will go viral as soon as the album drops. Only time will show the truth. Eminem goes hard on Mariah Carey and her husband, Nick Cannon. Eminem is not done with his beef since 2001 yet! Nick Cannon, as a visitor on T.I.’s podcast ExpediTIously in 2019, he talked about preferring to prove his masculinity to Mariah, in the role, by contesting Eminem to a physical fight. Eminem stands up for himself by literally threatening to end both his and his wife’s careers at once.
What are these guys? High-schoolers? But nevertheless, we are getting entertained during Mariah Carey Christmas season as “All I Want for Christmas is You” is about to peak. This is a nice attack, Eminem. Aside from the beef, Eminem honors the death of Tupac Shakur and his mother, Afeni Shakur, and yearns for peace to their resting souls. Then, Eminem proceeds to reminisce about his childhood and the struggles that he had had to go through just to put food on his table. Looking at his life at the moment, Eminem feels like everything is a deed of God and he’s been blessed by God.
Conclusion: Lord Above Meaning
I never thought out of all other rappers, Eminem would be the one to talk about God. For me, Eminem had always been an atheist. Regardless, the song was pretty tough.
