Ghost – Darkness at the Heart of My Love Lyrics Meaning

The meaning of the lyrics of ‘Darkness at the Heart of My Love’ by Ghost is that people do all kinds of shady things for money and power in the name of God. People often conceal their true intention and deflect towards being “God-fearing” and religious. But in their heart lies their true intention of obsessing over money, power, and success.

‘Darkness at the Heart of My Love’ reveals the hypocrisy of people who don’t hesitate to do anything illegal for money and power. While they are preaching about God and becoming God-fearing people.

Introduction: Darkness at the Heart of My Love Lyrics

Throughout our civilization, people have developed a skill to hide their intentions. Everyone learns to hide their true intentions sooner or later. Those who don’t are often left behind and they aren’t taken seriously by society. People say things that other people want to hear to get something out of them. The lyrics for ‘Darkness at the Heart of My Love’ by Ghost expose such people.

There’s a darkness at the heart of my love
That runs cold, runs deep
The darkness at the heart of my love
So bold, so sweet

Darkness at the Heart of My Love Lyrics Meaning

Let’s analyze the meaning of the lyrics behind the song ‘Darkness at the Heart of My Love’ by Ghost line by line in detail.

[Verse 1/ Bridge/ Outro]

The lyrics of the song are written from the perspective of a callous man. “Severing the ties” means to end a connection with someone or something. When the summer ends, the singer is planning to cut off ties with someone or something. Then, he proceeds to assure someone that he won’t cut ties with him/her. However, there is a condition for that. S/he must behave in a socially acceptable way.

“walk a line” means to practise self-control and to behave in a socially acceptable way. “my path serpentine” means to not have a fixed direction like that of a snake.

[Pre-Chorus/ Chorus]

Here, the callous person wants you to tell him/her your goals in life. If s/he believes that you are rebellious in any way, you are no good to him/her. There is darkness at the heart of the callous person. The darkness runs cold and deep within his/her soul. A callous person will do everything for his/her benefit. Such people don’t care about other people.

[Verse 2]

In the second verse, the callous person is manipulating another person to get into substance abuse. S/he is brainwashed by the callous person to drip the blood for their rituals while assuring that s/he won’t be left alone. After a while, another person enters the room to check if their plan was executed properly. The person is probably killed in the name of love.

“spill the wine” means injecting yourself with an illegal substance so that the blood drips out of the vein. “paint a pair of eyes” means another person is invited to check something carefully.

Conclusion: Darkness at the Heart of My Love Meaning

The lyrics of ‘Darkness at the Heart of My Love’ by Ghost mean that a callous person will do anything in his/her power to appear socially acceptable. They can cut people off instantly if they are not acting the way a callous person wants them to. This way, they can do anything they want and nobody would question their motives.

    Intro:
It’s not a depressing song, it’s not even a black song, per say. I see it as a love song. A song asking for a lover to follow another, to see out a future.

“…severing the ties, I’m with you always, always…”
Despite a relationship dying, the writer wants to remain friends. There’s love that’s unrequited. The writer wants to remain close.

“Will you walk the line? My path serpentine”? There’s a hope of perhaps reuniting. Getting back together and building something. Together. He wants to travel the fates together. His path. But it won’t be easy. The path is twisting and fraught with life.

“Tell me who you want to be, and I will set you free…”? The author admits realizing that he got things wrong, that he assumed something that wasn’t so. The author wants to give the other the room to do what they want, but have his path, too.

“There’s a darkness at the heart of my love…” the author admits being selfish and self-centered and forsaking the other person in the relationship so he can follow his path, but he loves the other person. He longs for the girl he’s forsaken and lost.

“Will you spill the wine?” It’s blood spilled, it’s a broken heart. The author regrets his actions. He longs for the other person.
“I’m with you always…” He longs for what he’s now missing. The other person he’s forsaken and lost.

“I’m with you with always…Now paint a pair of eyes…” He longs for her. He wants to share experiences with her. He misses her presence, and sharing his life with her. He wants her to see and share what he sees and experiences.

“Remember always, that love is all you need…” He remembers their shared life. He wishes she was there to experience what he sees. The experiences are empty without her.

“Tell me who you want to be..” He’s willing to let her travel her path, too, as long as she is with him to travel his path, too. He wants to share life with her. And her with him.

“Remember always that love is all you need…” He wants her to remember their experiences, and to come back because of what they’ve already shared. He wants her back.

The chorus voices? It’s support. He wants support for their reuniting and living life.

I see “will you spill the wine” as a reference to going against the church by refusing communion. Sever ties with the church etc. I generally agree with the author.
