Although, in a subtle way, the lyrics for “Song 33” are in fact dedicated to the rapper J. Cole. However, the song isn’t just about Noname being critical of “Snow On Tha Bluff”. She says this is not the time to be hurting because someone expressed their opinions on a few things. Instead, people should be focusing on coming together in the current uprising against racial injustice and a huge wealth gap.

Let’s dissect the meaning behind the lyrics of “Song 33” by Noname as a response to J. Cole section-wise.

“Song 33” is simply not Noname responding to J. Cole. It is her trying to bring everyone together during the time of the uprising. The track speaks for quiet people with a bigger platform.

[Intro/ Chorus]

In the intro and chorus sections of “Song 33”, Noname tries to talk about her dreams and ambitions. However, as a black woman, she says her dreams and ambitions do not come with ease. Despite her being born in a prosperous household, it is still hard for her to make a name for herself. Then, at the same time, you can hear multiple stories of black people getting murdered in the broad daylight. It scares her to the point where she believes it’s next to impossible for the black community to upgrade their lifestyles.

In the first verse of, the rapper doesn’t hesitate to say as though she feels threatened by patriarchy. During the time of crisis, she feels as though J. Cole is pressed about the criticisms thrown at his silence. There are activists who have disappeared. Instead of using the bigger platform for the change, she feels odd that J. Cole thought about writing a song about her. The only complaint from his side is that he doesn’t necessarily agree with the tone of her activism.

Then, in the second verse of the track, the artist calls J. Cole out for not being able to take criticisms. At times like these, when his voice could have been used for the change, he chose to make a song about her tone. It doesn’t sit well with her as she says the rappers she has idolized have remained quiet throughout the movement. Then, one of them responds to her by writing a song about her when there are people fighting for their lives and basic human rights.

In the third verse of the track, the rapper raises a fair question of what J. Cole could have offered. There are people fighting for basic human rights and proper treatment of people. While instead of focusing on the major social issues, J. Cole jotted down a song about her. She says that she doesn’t mind the tone of her activism since the objectives of her activism are getting attacked by the officials in power. Therefore, she is speaking her mind while calling out her heroes for the new world order.
