Conan Gray, Winner: The Lyrics & Their Meaning

The first verse of “Winner” lyrics by Conan Gray talks about packing his bag up when he was only fourteen years old. He wasn’t planning on leaving his home but he shares the emotional moment of having to leave home at an early age. These emotions are expressed in the lines “Packed my bags at fourteen // I hadn’t planned on leaving”. Then, he touches on the absence of his father. He says his father wasn’t at home as he was in the military. As he leaves, Conan says that the pots, pans, and roaches are glad that he is leaving. However, even pots, pans, and roaches shudder in front of his father. This implies his father was very strict and he is feared by everyone in his home. The lines “But you haven’t been back home for days // The pots and pans and roaches // They’re glad I’m finally goin’ // ‘Cause, even them, they shudder at your name” mean the absence of a father figure at home and his scary personality.

In the Pre-Chorus of the song, Conan Gray continues to hint his lyrics at his father. He blames his father for being rigid and strict as everyone knew of his behavior besides him himself. These emotions are expressed in the lines “You don’t really want to hear the truth, do you? // It’s obvious to anyone who ever knew you”. He also shares the same sentiment in the Outro of the song. The father valued his perspective of truth more than anybody else’s opinions around him. His personality trait was to be right in all situations, even if it is by lying. Conan proves these sentiments with the lines “That all you ever want is to be right // Even if that means you gotta lie to do it // The only thing you’ve proven”. He shares the household environment filled with the obsessive need for domination and control.

The Chorus of “Winner” lyrics by Conan Gray talks about facing mistreatment at his own home at the age of fourteen. He changes the narrative in the Chorus. Out of everyone, no one can beat his own father for making Conan’s childhood bad and toxic. He affirms to his father’s need to be right and the singer gives him what he wants. He calls him “the real winner” with the lines “Is that there’s no one // Who ever has done better // At makin’ me feel worse // Now you rеally are the winner”. It also sounds like Conan is forgiving his father after understanding his nature. Conan Gray has come to terms with “he is who he is” in the lines “That ever did quite kill me // More than what you did // Now you really are the winner // Take a bow ’cause you’re the winner”. He repeats the same sentiments in the Post-Chorus.

In the second verse of “Winner,” Conan Gray tells his father to live within his bubble of victory. With all the fear and manipulation in his house, he sings the lines “Bask inside your victory // My heart that once was beating // Bleeding in the palm of your hand”. Despite what happened in his childhood, his father misses him dearly. Yet, Conan Gray feels guilty for not going back to his home. He blames his father for letting things get this bad with the lines “Yet, you have the nerve to miss me // How do I somehow feel guilty // When you’re the one who let it get this bad?”

Winner Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Packed my bags at fourteen
I hadn’t planned on leaving
But you haven’t been back home for days
The pots and pans and roaches
They’re glad I’m finally goin’
‘Cause, even them, they shudder at your name

[Pre-Chorus]
You don’t really want to hear the truth, do you?
It’s obvious to anyone who ever knew you
That all you ever want is to be right
Even if that means you gotta lie to do it
The only thing you’ve proven

[Chorus]
Is that there’s no one
Who ever has done better
At makin’ me feel worse
Now you rеally are the winner
Yеah, there’s nothing
That ever did quite kill me
More than what you did
Now you really are the winner
Take a bow ’cause you’re the winner

[Post-Chorus]
You’re the winner

[Verse 2]
Bask inside your victory
My heart that once was beating
Bleeding in the palm of your hand
Yet, you have the nerve to miss me
How do I somehow feel guilty
When you’re the one who let it get this bad?

[Pre-Chorus]
You don’t really want to hear the truth, do you?
It’s obvious to anyone who ever knew you
That all you ever wanted was to fight
I was only tryin’ to survive your chaos
Well, look at how it’s paid off

[Chorus]
‘Cause now there’s no one
Who ever has done better
At makin’ me feel worse
Now you really are the winner (Winner)
Yeah, there’s nothing
That ever did quite kill me
More than what you did
Now you really are the winner (Winner)
Take a bow ’cause you’re the winner

[Post-Chorus]
(La-la, la-la-la)
You’re the winner (La-la-la, la-la, la-la)
(La-la, la-la-la)
You’re the winner (La-la-la, la-la, la-la)

[Outro]
‘Cause you don’t really want to hear the truth, do you?
